Cat Care - Feeding, Cleaning, Cuddling
This job is all about figuring out what makes a cat happy. And when a cat lays its head softly against your cheek, closes its eyes and begins to purr in your ear, you know you’ve succeeded!
Cat Care volunteers help with cleaning, and with feeding and socializing cats within our Kitty Kove located at Sammie's Friends Nevada County Animal Shelter at 14647 McCourtney Rd, Grass Valley, CA 95949.
There are three different sessions to volunteer – 8:30 to 11am, noon to 2:30pm and 2:30 to 4pm.
This is what it takes:
Approximately 2-3 hours for a shift – choose from one in the morning or two in the afternoon. The morning shift is when the heavy work is done. The cat kennels, community rooms and litter boxes are all cleaned and then all the cats get a tasty meal. In the afternoon, the cuddling begins full force - holding, petting, brushing and playing! The afternoon crew also helps potential adopters meet and handle the cats.
In addition, understanding computers is helpful and may assist in taking on other tasks that help the overall day-to-day operations. Other tasks may include laundry and dishes that occur throughout the day; as well as answering the phone when needed.
Other Qualifications:
- Provide positive customer service skills
- Must be able to verbally communicate with public, staff, and volunteers.
- Must be 16 years or older.
This is what it accomplishes:
Handling the cats helps to socialize them. It keeps them calmer in a stressful environment, which makes them more adoptable. We show potential adopters how each cat likes to be cuddled. We also help with disease control (a very important role) by keeping the kennels and rooms clean and reporting issues to the shelter staff.

EXPRESS INTEREST and our Volunteer Coordinator will contact you to find out what days and times you are available. They will also schedule a time for you to come out and train with one of our Lead Cat Care Volunteers.
