One Source – Empowering Caregivers: Next Training September 12, 2020

The next training for One Source – Empowering Caregivers volunteers will be Saturday, September 12, 2020 and will run from 9am to 4:30pm.

OSEC will be training for the following volunteer positions:

  • Respite Care Specialists
  • Office
  • Telephone support
  • Board members
  • Fundraising

If interested, please contact OSEC before September 8th. EXPRESS INTEREST below and OSEC will get in touch to schedule a pre-training interview.

The training program is intensive and comprehensive, covering a wide range of topics.

OSEC requests that people interested in any of the positions attend the fulll training as the information is relevant to understanding the overall mission of the organization.

There are modules taught by experts in the field that provide an overview of:

  • Caring for the Caregiver
  • Listening skills and self-care as a volunteer
  • Family systems and communication
  • Illness, aging, cognitive loss, and behavior management
  • Spirituality, grief, and bereavement
  • Volunteer protocols and the many roles of the OSEC volunteer

An ongoing monthly meeting for support and sharing is offered for all volunteers: office, in-home, and telephone volunteers. Everyone is welcome.

More About Respite Care Specialists

Volunteer Respite Care Specialists provide respite care so that people who are caring for a loved one at home can have some time for themselves – for self-care, errands, socializing, and so on.

Prospective Volunteer Respite Care Specialists will be interviewed and undergo background checks and fingerprinting. The “in-home volunteer” is asked to commit to being a respite companion for one year and to spending four hours a week with a caregiver and/or a care recipient upon graduating from the training program.

While OSEC’s Volunteer Respite Care Specialists do not provide medical care—only companion care—the modules train them on a wide range of issues that they may encounter during the course of their companion duties.

Many OSEC volunteers bond with their “caregivers,” often spending more time with them than they have committed to. They care about their charges and can attend the support groups to talk about their feelings and experiences with others in similar situations.

One Source – Empowering Caregivers is growing and will be adding programs as funding permits. If you cannot volunteer on a regular basis, there are always other opportunities to support the outstanding work being done in the community. Caregivers are generally on their own as they care for their loved one and are therefore somewhat invisible. The goal of One Source – Empowering Caregivers is to bring HOPE to CAREGIVERS.
