Volunteer Instructional Coach-The Friendship Club

Purpose

A Friendship Club Instructional Coach is a well-qualified, caring adult who is able to encourage and support individual student(s) in their studies, as well as their personal life. Your engagement with a Friendship Club youth will be approved in advance with both the parent/guardian and the student. You will be trained for this role, and TFC staff will be part of your initial video conference (zoom) session to ensure a successful introduction. TFC staff will provide ongoing support during your relationship.  

Duties and Responsibilities

  • With the use of video communication, work one-on-one with a student enrolled in either The Friendship Club or SAFE Program on a regular basis to help them stay on top of their school work and adjust to studying outside of the classroom
  • As stay-at-home restrictions ease, it is feasible for face to face interaction according to state & local best practices during pandemics
  • Play the role of coach to teach and encourage effective time management techniques and to learn/practice self-guided study skills
  • Be aware of and help guide each student through areas in which they feel stuck
  • Recognize and inform The Friendship Club staff if a student would benefit from a tutor in specific subject(s) and/or a therapist

Time Commitment

  • The time commitment will vary depending on a student’s ability to focus and engage in their school work from home. Some students will need more guidance than others
  • It is anticipated each student could take advantage of a 30-60 minute session via video communication (zoom), once or twice a week

Skills & Qualifications

  • Enjoy working with preteen and teenage youth
  • Engage in active listening to help the student understand they are cared for, understood and heard
  • Ability to work one-on-one with a youth, taking into consideration their particular learning style and strengths
  • Ability to display enthusiasm, leadership, commitment and compassion towards each student and their particular passions
  • Willingness and ability to work in partnership with Friendship Club Staff and student’s parent/guardian; potential to interact with student’s teacher(s) as well to act as a liaison helping student to prioritize and understand how best to tackle assignments
  • Proficient computer and zoom skills, personal zoom account is required

Lines of Communication

  • Distance Learning Coaches will work with the Community Engagement Manager initially to be screened as a volunteer
  • Distance Learning Coaches will interface with the Youth Development Coordinators to set up video communication strategy with their student(s). The Youth Development Coordinator will be the point of contact should any issues arise about the student’s participation, performance or attitude.
  • Distance Learning Coaches will be introduced online to the student’s parent/guardian and coaches will manage their own schedules and video communication meetings in coordination with the student and parent/guardian
  • Distance Learning Coaches are required to record their sessions and email the url to the Youth Development Coordinator

Requirements

  • Complete successfully The Friendship Club volunteer screening process with the help of the Community Engagement Manager
  • Sign Non-disclosure (Confidentiality) Agreement
  • Familiarization with Google Classroom and Schoology is ideal; or a willingness to train to become proficient

  • Please be willing to partner with us to work through roadblocks you may encounter

Frustrations

  • Youth who should be able to grasp subject matter may be resistant to learning due to the difficult circumstances of their lives
  • A youth may not participate on a video conferencing session as arranged or making arrangements to meet may be difficult. However, the Friendship Club will take every measure to facilitate scheduled coaching sessions.
