Mentor for Youth

Who is a Mentor?
A Bright Futures for Youth mentor is an adult who provides friendship, guidance and encouragement. Caring, compassionate adults who enjoy offering support to pre-teens and teenage youth and are interested in devoting time to help these youth. As a mentor, you join a circle of adult volunteers and staff who are dedicated to our mission and vision.

Why become a Mentor?
Our success rate at Bright Futures for Youth is a result of a comprehensive, year-round program aimed at helping empower youth, so they thrive as adults. A key proven success factor is the role of the mentor. Having someone who is not a family member or a teacher who invests their time means a great deal to a young person and may allow them to benefit in a multitude of ways:

The Bright Futures for Youth Mentor Program is currently year-round. All mentors are interviewed, screened and trained at the direction of the Community Engagement Manager, Cindy Hintz.
The screening and background check include the following:
- submit to a criminal background check
- submit to social security number verification
- submit a copy of current driver's license
- submit proof of automobile insurance meeting requirement: Bodily Injury $300K per occurrence; $100K per person
- submit to a motor vehicle report check
- sign a non-disclosure agreement
Qualifications
- Enjoy working with pre-teen and/or teenage youth
- Flexible - able to cope with last minute changes in plans or difficulties in reaching a youth to set up a time to meet
- Tolerant - able to cope with last minute changes in plans
- Patience and perseverance
- Willingness to work collaboratively with the Bright Futures for Youth staff
Time Commitment
- Mentors and youth spend approximately 18-24 hours of 1:1 time over a 6 month period of time
- Mentors and youth set up their own mutually agreed upon meeting schedule, depending on availability of each party and how they choose to spend their time
- You may spend more time together, if you desire
- At the end of 6 months, both mentor and youth are surveyed about the quality of the program and experience; it is determined at that time if both parties choose to move into a longer term mentor relationship
