Kitchen Volunteer - Prep

Overview:

Bright Futures for Youth (BFFY) Kitchen Volunteer positions are an integral part of our team.  We prepare meals for both our drop-in and after school services as part of our Nutrition Program aimed at improving social-emotional experiences, alleviating food scarcity in our area, and providing our youth with a broadened sense of community while bolstering their knowledge of nutrition and the importance of a fundamentally healthy lifestyle.

Kitchen Volunteer positions are ideal for both the person who is new to the food service industry and is eager to learn how to contribute to our goals through work in our commercial kitchen, as well as the person who is familiar with ServSafe requirements, has plenty of experience in commercial kitchens, and just might be eager to share a few recipes of their own with our youth!

All are welcome and encouraged to volunteer in our Nutrition Program. Youth under the age of 15 are welcome to volunteer with a parent or guardian present. Each position provides a unique perspective of a commercial kitchen, yet all three share some responsibilities, as we are all part of the same team working toward the same goal.

Whether our volunteers are youth interested in gaining experience working in a commercial kitchen as they prepare to enter the food service industry, or retirees in pursuit of community engagement and a way to exercise their philanthropic needs, all will enjoy the dining experience we create together for our youth!

The Prep Role

The perfect position to start in if you are looking for experience working with food due to interest in a career as a chef, caterer, or restaurant owner or if you simply enjoy breaking down ingredients and organizing for meal preparation.

Volunteers in the prep role will begin by organizing ingredients to be used in meals for the week. This can include chopping, weighing, and storing ingredients, baking breads and desserts, roasting meats, and even working with our industrial dehydrator.

No experience is necessary for this role, as training will be provided. The prep role is centered around preparing ingredients but does include some light cleaning at the end of the shift. Volunteers should be aware this role requires a long period of standing and occasionally lifting items up to 25 lbs.

Duties Performed:

  • Uphold ServSafe standards for cleanliness and food storage, such as proper labelling, appropriate container choice, fridge/freezer organization.
  • Learning different cut techniques to support the integrity of each recipe such as julienne, chop, slice, dice, chiffonade, etc. as well as size references like Large, medium, small, petite, fine, and mince.
  • Using blenders, food processors, electric can openers, stand mixers, vacuum sealers, slicers, and other equipment common to commercial kitchens.
  • Assisting in preparation of sauces, salad dressings, baked goods, birthday treats, and plenty of other specialty items.
  • Cleaning your area by wiping counters used and clearing floors of any dropped food; cleaning tools used such as cutting boards, knives, bowls, pans, etc.

Some key skills/personal attributes that will help any volunteer in the prep role include: an interest in food service, good communication skills (the ability to ask for help, retraining, or deeper explanations), a positive attitude, good organizational skills, and an understanding of the importance of health and hygiene in the kitchen.
