SAFE Navigator
SAFE (Stability, Access, Foundation, Empowerment) Program will provide academic, social and emotional support and life skills training to youth experiencing homelessness in Nevada County as they transition into adulthood.
A SAFE Navigator is a well-trained adult who can connect program participants to community resources. The Navigator’s one-on-one connection fosters the development of trust and relationship with SAFE participants. Long term, the Navigator plays a crucial role as a caring adult guiding SAFE participants into the community and offering them the support they need to stay in school and mature into a healthy adult life.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Serve as a long-term Mentor/Coach
- Manage a case load of 3-4 SAFE participants at a time
- Act as point person for a variety of needs
- Provide transportation for appointments, errands, shopping, etc.
- Provide 1:1 support for college and financial aid applications
- Attend SAFE group activities, workshops and trainings as necessary
Time Commitment
- Navigators should plan to serve from 1-3 years in the SAFE Program
- Estimated weekly 5-10 hours
Qualifications
- Enjoy working with teenage youth
- Maintain a spirit of openness to meet the SAFE participant where they are
- Flexible—able to cope with last minute changes in plans or difficulties in reaching a SAFE participant
- Tolerant—able to accept a difficult life situation that a SAFE participant may be experiencing
- Patience and perseverance
- Willingness to work collaboratively with The Friendship Club staff
- Willingness to use a cell phone, social media and social network as primary forms of communication with SAFE participants
Lines of Communication
- Report to The Friendship Club Youth Empowerment Coordinator
- Interact with various Friendship Club staff members from time to time
Requirements for SAFE Volunteer Screening
- Copy of your valid driver’s license
- DMV driving record
- Proof of auto insurance (a copy of declarations page)
- Live Scan for criminal background check by State of California Department of Justice
- Clear a check of the sex offender registry
- Sign Non-disclosure (Confidentiality) Agreement
Training and Support
- The Friendship Club Mentor Training
- Positive Youth Development Training
- Trauma Informed Training
- Opportunity to attend Mentor Support Group meetings at The Friendship Club
Grounds for Termination
- Failure to follow policies or carry out responsibilities
- Misrepresentation of The Friendship Club, the SAFE Program or its policies
- Breach of confidentiality
- Unsafe driving
Frustrations
- Some SAFE Participants are difficult to reach to make a date for a visit
- Some SAFE Participants may tend to remain shy and be unwilling to open up
- Relationships may ebb & flow. It isn’t uncommon as a SAFE Participant ages to get quite busy with school, work and extracurricular activities, perhaps making it difficult to schedule time together
- Witnessing a SAFE Participant in a troubled family situation that cannot be fixed from the outside
